Admission Policy

The Department of Physical Education, Junior College was founded in 1950 as the Physical Education Department, Chukyo Women's Junior College. It has the longest tradition and history at our university, as it has produced a wealth of teachers, top-caliber athletes, as well as proficient athletic coaches.
The department’s educational objectives are to “develop a well-rounded character with specialized knowledge and practical skills that are required to become a physical education or sports and exercise coach, and cultivate people skills that will contribute to human health.”

In addition, the department provides courses for acquiring a junior high school teacher (physical education) license and various other coaching qualifications related to sports and health.
These courses offer a distinct form of education that places an emphasis on developing specialized knowledge and practical skills which will be necessary when going out into the real world and working as a coach in a variety of sports or as a health promotion coach.
Therefore, students with a vision and a strong sense of purpose who fulfill the following criteria are desired at our department.

Those aspiring to become experts on human health promotion who have acquired the specialized knowledge and coaching methods required to promote human health at each life stage, and are able to contribute to health retention and enhancement through sports and exercise.

Those aspiring to become coaches who have acquired specialized knowledge regarding the characteristics and rules of sports and exercise, and are capable of leading sports and exercise scientifically.

Those aspiring to become coaches who have acquired specialized knowledge and coaching methods required for building physical strength and promoting human health through school education (physical education), and are able to contribute in those areas.

Those aspiring to become athletic trainers who have acquired specialized knowledge and skills for training methods, first aid, and taping methods used in the field of sports and exercise.

Those aspiring to become experts on industries related to sports and exercise who have acquired specialized knowledge and practical skills for business and management in the field of sports and exercise.

While studying in our department, we expect students to actively participate not only in the academic learning activities held at high schools, but also in extracurricular activities, school events, and volunteer activities,
as well as communicate with other people as much as possible through physical exertion activities.

Curriculum Policy

The curriculum for the Department of Physical Education is based on our educational philosophy and objectives. The Liberal Arts Subjects, which are aimed at cultivating a well-rounded character,
and the Specialized Subjects, which are aimed at developing specialized knowledge and practical skills, are organized based on the following policies.

Liberal Arts Subjects

The Liberal Arts Subjects, which are aimed at cultivating a well-rounded character, are organized as described below.

  • The Info Courses will be offered aimed at developing fundamental communication skills, knowledge of information-related issues, and media literacy, all of which are necessary in today’s society.
  • The English Education Subjects are offered aimed at improving the ability of students to communicate in English as a means to respond to the need for globalization, and are designed according to the level of each student.
  • The Information Education Subjects are offered aimed at enhancing knowledge of information-related issues and the media literacy of students, and are designed according to the level of each student.
  • The General Education Subjects are offered aimed at developing the ability of students to think and act on their own.

Specialized Subjects

The Specialized Subjects are aimed at achieving the educational objectives as well as the diploma policy, and the following four academic disciplines will be offered.
 

  • The general seminars, which are offered to freshmen, are aimed at arousing the interest of students in physical education, and sports and exercise.
  • The specialized seminars, which are offered to sophomores, are aimed at developing specialized knowledge and practical skills in a field chosen by the student.
  • Abundant seminars and practical courses will be offered to allow students to develop their own coaching methods, techniques, and practical skills while also gathering fundamental knowledge from the lectures.

In addition, two sample courses will be offered - the “Physical Education Course” and the “Athletic Trainer Course” - for more specialized and effective learning. These courses are chosen by the students according to their future plans.

Academic Disciplines

Physical Education

  1. Academic discipline aimed at studying the history and the role of physical education, and sports and exercise, as well as developing specialized scientific knowledge in fields such as sociology and psychology, which coaches must possess.
  2. Academic discipline aimed at developing specialized knowledge and practices for business and management which are required in the planning and organizing of projects and events related to sports and exercise.

Kinematics

Academic discipline aimed at developing specialized scientific knowledge on training and coaching methods, which coaches of physical education, and sports and exercise must possess.

Practical Courses and Training Programs

  1. Academic discipline aimed at learning about the characteristics and rules of sports and exercise as well as developing scientific coaching methods.
  2. Academic discipline aimed at developing specialized knowledge and coaching methods for outdoor activities as well as coaching methods that take into account whether a person has a disability or what life stage they are in.

Physical Fitness for Health

  1. Academic discipline aimed at developing specialized scientific knowledge in fields such as nutrition, aging (growth and development), and health, all of which are required for human health promotion.
  2. Academic discipline aimed at developing specialized scientific knowledge in fields such as physiology, medicine, and mechanics, all of which are required in building physical strength.
  3. Academic discipline aimed at developing specialized knowledge and skills for conditioning, taping, and massaging, which are required when assisting athletes.

Course aimed at developing specialized knowledge and skills for those aspiring to become athletic trainers.

Diploma Policy

In an aim to achieve the educational objectives described above, the Department of Physical Education awards students with an associate degree in Physical Education if the number of credits prescribed by the department as well as the skills below have been satisfied.

Student those who acquire specialized knowledge and skills for training methods, first aid, and taping methods used in the field of sports and exercise, and is able to assist athletes (for those who took Athletic Trainer courses).

Student those who acquire specialized knowledge and practical skills for business and management in the field of sports and exercise, and is capable of planning and organizing programs and events related to sports and exercise.
